Is it too hot to run?

There is no single cutoff temperature, and anyone who gives you one is guessing. The real answer depends on moisture and sun at least as much as the thermometer, and on your own body more than any weather number. Here is the index races actually decide with, what heat measurably costs, and when the question stops being about pace. Informational, not medical advice.

Why there is no single cutoff number

Running generates heat, and your body sheds most of it by evaporating sweat. That makes the real limit evaporation, not air temperature: when the air is already loaded with moisture, sweat sits instead of evaporating and the cooling engine loses capacity. Two afternoons with identical thermometer readings can be a routine run and a genuinely hard one, depending on the dew point and the sun.

The other half of the answer is you. Heat tolerance is strongly shaped by acclimatization — the adaptations your body builds over roughly one to two weeks of regular running in warm conditions, per the ACSM position stand — and by fitness, health conditions, and medications, none of which a weather app can see. (The acclimatization guide covers the full picture.) A number that is a routine training run for an acclimatized runner in August can be a bad idea for the same runner in May. WBGT — the number races actually use

Organized races do not decide with the thermometer or the heat index. The standard is WBGT — wet-bulb globe temperature — defined in 1957 and used by essentially all of the published running-heat research since. The formula is a weighted blend: 70% wet-bulb temperature (a wet-wick thermometer that heat and moisture set together — the reading closest to how well evaporation can work), 20% globe temperature (radiant load from the sun), and 10% plain air temperature. The weights are the lesson: the dry-thermometer number you glance at is, on its own, a minority share of the index — the rest is moisture and sun acting on it.

On top of WBGT sits the event-alert flag system from the ACSM's road-racing guidance — the colored flags you see at the start line. Above roughly 28°C WBGT (82°F) is the black-flag zone — where Wyndo's calculator stops giving pace numbers and defers entirely to the race's flag guidance. Those flags belong to the race: Wyndo translates the same categories, and the race director decides. If your event has raised a flag, that guidance outranks anything a weather app tells you.

What heat measurably does to your pace

The field research is marathon-based and the two main studies disagree — which is why the answer is a range. Ely (2007) found slowdowns growing with WBGT across the studied ~5–25°C (41–77°F) range, and growing faster for slower runners: roughly 1% per +5°C (9°F) of WBGT for the fastest cohort, around 1.5% for three-hour runners. Mantzios (2022), across a larger multi-race dataset, found roughly half to two-thirds of Ely's effect. The disagreement between those studies is the width of the range Wyndo's heat-adjusted pace calculator shows.

The same literature has a useful flip side: performance versus temperature is an inverted U with its optimum around 4–10°C (39–50°F), cooler for faster cohorts (El Helou 2012). Cool mornings that feel slow to warm up in are, statistically, where the fast races happen. Heat costs pace on one side of that curve — but so does genuine cold on the other.

Above the published range, stop asking about pace

The pace studies above stop near 25°C WBGT (77°F), and the flag guidance goes black above roughly 28°C (82°F). Wyndo's calculator tracks both lines: between them it still prints a range but labels it as beyond the published study range, and above the black-flag line it stops printing a pace entirely and pivots to safety framing. In that zone the question is no longer "how much slower?" but "whether, and when": shift the run toward dawn, shorten it, drop intensity, or skip it. Running-heat questions

Is there an exact temperature that is too hot to run?
No. Air temperature alone cannot answer it, because the body’s real limit is how well sweat evaporates — which depends on moisture in the air and sun load, not just the thermometer. Two days with the same air temperature can be an easy run and a genuinely risky one. That is why organized races decide with WBGT, an index whose dominant term rises with moisture, and why the answer also depends on you: your acclimatization, fitness, and health, which no weather app can know. Why do races use WBGT instead of the heat index?
WBGT (wet-bulb globe temperature) is the index the published race research and event flag systems are built on. It blends three readings: wet-bulb temperature at 70% weight (a wet-wick thermometer that heat and moisture set together — the reading closest to how well evaporation, the body’s cooling engine, can work), globe temperature at 20% (radiant sun load), and the dry air temperature at 10%. The weighting is the point: the familiar dry-thermometer number is, on its own, a small share of the index — moisture and sun shape the rest.
How much does heat actually slow you down?

Is early morning really the best time to run in summer?
Usually, but not automatically. Around dawn, air temperature is typically at its daily low and the sun’s radiant contribution is near zero — two of WBGT’s three inputs at their gentlest. Moisture, however, is often highest at dawn — so a humid sunrise can still be a hard run. The reliable way to choose is to compare the actual start times: Wyndo’s run planner scores every start time across your range and names the limiting condition for each.
